Progress towards ending overfishing in the Northeast Atlantic

چکیده
The reformed Common Fisheries Policy of the EU, in force since 2014, stipulates that overfishing by fleets its member states has to end latest year 2020. This study examines exploitation and status 119 stocks fished 20 countries Northeast Atlantic. In 2018, about 40% were still subject (F > Fmsy), 34% outside safe biological limits (B < Bpa) 68% too small produce maximum sustainable yields Bmsy). Reduction number overfished stalled, possible because an agreement between European Commission (EC) International Council for Exploration Seas (ICES), advisory body total allowed catches (TACs), wherein EC requests ICES give TAC advice leading many stocks. Scientific is often overruled or ignored politicians/fisheries ministers, whose main objective get us much quota as their country. As a result, TACs set 2020, 46% exceeded scientific advice, suggesting goal ending 2020 will not be met.

متن کاملA blooming jellyfish in the northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean
A long-term time series of plankton records collected by the continuous plankton recorder (CPR) Survey in the northeast Atlantic indicates an increased occurrence of Cnidaria since 2002. In the years 2007 and 2008, outbreaks of the warm-temperate scyphomedusa, Pelagia noctiluca, appeared in CPR samples between 45° N to 58° N and 1° W to 26° W. Knowing the biology of this species and its occurre...
متن کاملPhytoplankton Growth and Microzooplankton Grazing in the Subtropical Northeast Atlantic
Dilution experiments were performed to estimate phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing rates during two Lagrangian surveys in inner and eastern locations of the Eastern North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre province (NAST-E). Our design included two phytoplankton size fractions (0.2-5 µm and >5 µm) and five depths, allowing us to characterize differences in growth and grazing rates between...
متن کاملDepth-resolved particle-associated microbial respiration in the northeast Atlantic
Atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide are tightly linked to the depth at which sinking particulate organic carbon (POC) is remineralised in the ocean. Rapid attenuation of downward POC flux typically occurs in the upper mesopelagic (top few hundred metres of the water column), with much slower loss rates deeper in the ocean. Currently, we lack understanding of the processes that drive POC attenu...
متن کاملTrends and variability of storminess in the Northeast Atlantic
This article builds on the previous studies on storminess conditions in the northeast North Atlantic– European region. The period of surface pressure data analyzed is extended from 1881–1998 to 1874–2007. The seasonality and regional differences of storminess conditions in this region are also explored in more detail. The results show that storminess conditions in this region have undergone sub...
